Richmond Rain Garden

From the rain garden inspired plantings to a fun backyard playhouse, this SE Portland landscape is enlivened by color and texture.

The rain garden, which we installed through the City of Portland’s Residential Rain Garden Program, collects rainwater from the home’s roof and keeps it onsite to nourish the front garden’s soil and plants.

From selecting bright colored plants that pop against the dark house to echoing the interior palette on the playhouse, color is the connecting thread that runs through this project.

Small city backyards require thoughtful solutions, like these stairs that double as sittable space. Existing trees, shrubs and the new playhouse create a sense of shelter and privacy in this outdoor “room”.

A playhouse anchors the corner, creating more privacy and a sheltered nook for reading comic books and playing legos.
