Portal Garden

Our clients were enchanted by a textural wall with a circular opening and vibrant maple they encountered on a trip to Japan. Their photo of it became the touchstone for the design of this Japanese inspired garden.

Rainwater drip, drip, drips along the length of the porch roof’s waterfall edge, it cascades through an artisan rain chain at the end of the portal wall and it collects in a meandering swale before slowly seeping into the earth. Every drop of water that falls on this property stays onsite and is incorporated in a beautiful way.

Specimen pines, mossy granite boulders, an engawa style porch and the perfect salt and pepper granite in the raked gravel garden reflect the Japanese aesthetic we were charged with creating. With careful attention to views, we carved out several small spaces where our clients can sit quietly and take in different vistas of their garden.
