Foot traffic between the house and backyard was damaging the roots of this garden’s Heritage Big Leaf Maple. We leaned into the permaculture adage “the problem is the solution” and designed a meandering, raised boardwalk supported by footings carefully placed amongst the tree’s delicate roots.

Tables, chairs, and green umbrella placed on a rounded slate patio under the leaves beside vine maples and other foliage.

The mature maple tree, native understory plantings, and habitat features including a bird bath and nurse logs combined with a sound stormwater management strategy  earned this garden a Platinum Level Backyard Habitat Certification.
