CUSTOMIZE YOUR SPACE // BATHROOM EDITION

Our interior design shop just wrapped up the renovation of a Victorian home in Portland's Woodlawn neighborhood.

The home's new first floor bathroom serves as the guest bathroom and the kids' bath, and is visible from both the living room and the dining room. We continued the oak hardwood floor into the space to connect it with the rest of the first floor. The bathroom walls are playfully textured with a blue and white, stipple-patterned wallpaper and white, beveled ship lap. The cerused vanity, both elegant and rustic, provides closed storage (to stow bath toys!), while the marble top and polished nickel faucet glisten with high-end appeal. The salvaged claw foot tub, original to the home, was refinished with a fresh coat of deep blue paint. This feature tub and tailored shower curtains (that match the wallpaper!) create a lovely view from the home's living spaces.

As designers, we create one-of-a-kind spaces by interpreting the essence of a place and combining it with the client's personal style. It's the little touches that transform a space!

We've assembled a list of our five favorite ways to fashion your bathroom, illustrated with photos from our recent renovation.

1. A really great rug. We're talking a regular, wool rug - not a bath mat! Add a lush, tactile Tibetan or a colorful, vintage Kilim to your bathroom to spice up those white subway tiled walls.

2. Hardware: think of it as the jewelry of the space! Switch out your vanity knobs for something that makes a statement. Towel/robe hooks are another way to add visual interest.

3. The shower curtain. This is a place to spend some $$$. We really love Anthropologie's unique selections and Hygge & West offers shower curtain versions of some of their wallpaper patterns.

4. Speaking of wallpaper - The smallest room in your house is the perfect space for something bold. Vinyl wallpapers will perform best in the bathroom, but you can use other papers if you apply them away from the splash zone. Peel + stick papers are the perfect solution if you're the trendy type. We love the offerings from Chasing Paper.

5. Statement mirror. Think beyond the rectangle! Your mirror can reflect your character as well as your smiling face.
